Carlton was home this past weekend and it was a whirlwind! Several weeks ago he had heard about a perimeter relay run that the Guam Running Club hosts every year. The run covers 48.6 miles and is divided into 20 different legs. The distance of each leg depends on the terrain, longer legs are typically flat while the shorter legs are either uphill or downhill or a combination of both. Each team can have a maximum of ten people but there were a few teams with only two people. There were also five people who chose to run the entire thing on their own!
For the teams, the run began at 4:15am on Saturday morning. Each team is allowed two vehicles to cart around the runners along with whatever provisions the teams need. This was a very low budget event, so there is nothing provided along the route except for markers where one leg ends and the next begins. No road closures, no water stops, no energy gel packs and no t-shirt at the end. There were a few checkpoints along the way to make sure that each team was still going and no one was injured.
Carlton's team took about 7.5 hours to complete the run and everyone did a great job. He said they really enjoyed the run and already six of them have decided they want to do it again next year. One of the guys from the boat ran the whole thing alone but the lone runners were allowed to start at 9pm on Friday night. He had his girlfriend drive the route to support him with water and food along the way. He finished in about 13 hours but also took breaks along the way - he even stopped to take a shower at one point.
At the end of the run, the Guam Running Club did have a bunch of food set out for the runners. Carlton said that the two legs he did ended up being a total of about 6 miles, so it wasn't a very long run for him. But he had two of the legs that went both uphill and downhill, so his calves have definitely been sore!
This is the only picture he has from the race. At the end they had a stage set up for the teams to get pictures taken. Here is the Topeka Running Club:
Initially Carlton was thinking that he would be done around 11:30 on Saturday and he could come home and take a nap (he had woken up at 2:30am to get ready for the run and carpool). That did not happen. He didn't get home until around 12:30pm and Saturday night was the Submarine Birthday Ball (116 years!) A group of us were meeting at the hotel at 4pm to "pre-game" and avoid spending $8 for a beer.
One of our friends was nice enough to let us get dressed in their hotel room so that we didn't get all mussed on the drive. That definitely worked out better and was much more relaxing! We almost made it to 10pm before we were ready to go!! :-) Here are some pictures:
