About an hour later he seemed especially needy and wanting attention. He came over and put his head on my leg waiting for me to pet him, then he moved away and I noticed blood on my leg! Upon closer inspection I found that he had a bump under his chin about the size of a baseball and it was bleeding!
I have no idea how long it was there but it definitely hadn't been bleeding that long. He has a lot of extra skin around his neck and face, so the bump could have been there a few days without us noticing. I took him to a vet in town (the vet on base didn't have an opening until mid-April). They attempted to extract liquid from it but even with three of us holding him, he still wiggled away when the vet inserted the needle. Apparently the bump was extremely painful.
They ended up taking Edge to the back to express the wound in a large sink. They had to tape his mouth shut and hold him down while the vet used a blade to cut open the bump. The only thing they saw come out of it was blood! It was just a large sack of skin filled with blood. The vet thinks that he may have been bitten by a centipede. I haven't seen any since we moved here but Edge does like to sniff around in the bushes when we go on walks sometimes, so he could have easily run into one without us seeing it.
Once the wound was opened up and allowed to drain for a couple days, the bump improved significantly. It is currently Thursday (a week later) and it is now about the size of a cherry tomato. Edge is being good about taking his antibiotics and we have a follow-up appointment with the vet on Monday if it is still there. Here are some pictures...
